Z-Key Holder: A Smart Guest Touchpoint. A Case from MasterFold and Sani Resort.
From a Simple Fold to a Smarter Guest Touchpoint
A Case from Sani Resort — The details that don’t shout
How it all started:
A last-minute fix and a trusted handshake
At the start of the 2004 tourist season, the Sani Resort team and MasterFold worked together for the first time. The brief was concrete: 30,000 resort maps, unfolded. Custom-designed for Sani, they needed to be ready before the season opened. Folded into something guests could actually use. They trusted our expertise in print, paper and its applications. The maps came to us. Within a few days, the project was done.
The idea: One object, two functions
Folding all those maps led to a question. Could the map do more? The result was the slim Z-key holder. Its first version was simple and purely functional: standard paper, no added design elements, one clear purpose: to organise the information, fold to pocket size. On one side, the map unfolded fully for easy reading. On the other, the structure securely held the room key card. One object. Everything the guest needed on arrival.
A functional tool that became a keepsake
Over time, the format evolved. The design picked up the resort’s aesthetic and brand identity along the way, without losing what made it useful in the first place. The first order moved forward immediately. Every year since, the Z-key holder has been one of the core print items supplied to the resorts.
From a one-off project to a lasting partnership
That first project grew into something longer. New products, new creative briefs and a collaboration that steadily developed, gaining further momentum after Sani Resort merged with Ikos Resorts to form the Sani/Ikos Group in 2015. A last-minute folding job became a consistent touchpoint within the guest experience.
Z-key holder through the years
The Z-key holder evolved alongside the brand, following shifts in aesthetic direction, material choices and the resort’s needs at each stage.

The starting point — 2004
The first map we received from Sani Resort. Our role was purely functional: solve the folding, make it usable for guests.

First edition — 2004
The first version of the Z-key holder. Standard paper with cover lamination. Simple, clean, functional.

First rebranding — 2011
The core structure stays the same. Small adjustments to the cover artwork, aligned with the brand’s visual identity at the time.

Rebranding & brand evolution — 2015
New logo, new corporate identity. The interior map stays recognisable, the cover fully redesigned. Heavier cover stock (300gsm), gold foil on the logo, gloss lamination for amore striking finish.

A move to matte lamination on the cover. Quieter, more minimal, more considered.

Later evolution & material shift — 2023
Introduction of uncoated paper on the cover. A more natural, tactile feel and a noticeably more premium result.
